Movie Downloads - FAQ

So you have heard that you can download movies for free from the net. Well, yes you can. You can get latest release movies, and old movies. Every movie you can possible think of is available for free download.

The thing is though, it isn't easy. First off, the free movies are not just sitting there waiting for you to download them. Although, with the right tools, it can seem that easy. Basically, the movies are spread across thousands of servers, are encoded in a variety of different methods, and require different protocols to be able to download them.

You will therefore have to do quite a bit of research. You will need to know what types of client programs are available and where to get them from. Getting some of them setup can be a bit tricky for the novice user. Especially when it comes to port forwarding and firewall's.

Next you are going to need to know what servers to use with each of the clients you have. Different client/servers give different results. One combination works for one file, and another combination can be required for a very similar file. Often, files available via one method, will not be available via another.

Searching for the movie files you want is next. This can be the most daunting part of it all. You have to decipher cryptic codes like divx and xvid. Know what the difference between a TC and a CAM is, or even an SCR. Just when you think you have the movie you want, all you end up with is 50 strangely numbered files.

And then there is software toolbox you're going to need. You will need special software that can check the parity of the movie file. And yet another tool to assemble the segmented file back together from it's parts. You are going to need the correct codec installed on your computer so you can watch the movie.

I'll bet you are going to want to watch your movie on your TV as well. Then you are going to need some more software tools that can convert you download movie file into a format that your DVD player can play.

The best thing you can do is join a website like the Free Movies Homepage member site or the mp3center. They gather together all the software, clients and tools you will need. They provide access to search indexes so you can find the movie you want, and have support services to help you if you get stuck. It's sites like these that can help you get the movie you want.

Otherwise, if you want to put in the time, doom9.org is the premier site for information on everything you want to know about downloaded movies. They have information on all the formats and codecs, and have an excellent section about Surround Sound as well. You will want to read the sections on VCD and DVD authoring if you want to watch your downloaded movies on your standard DVD player. It's all pretty interesting stuff.
